Wondering what to wear for a race? Here are tips on what to wear, where to get it, and the gear you'll need.
Steps
-
Stay well hydrated. Make sure to bring something to drink with you to the race. Gatorade, Powerade, and water are all good choices. Getting enough to drink will ensure that you get that extra boost you need!
-
Get the right pair of running shoes. Have appropriate trainers, meaning spikes (cross country/astroturf), or flats. If you don't know what the correct type of running shoe is, check with a local running store. Many of the employees are runners themselves and can give valuable advice on the type of shoe needed.
-
Make sure the shoes are broken in before you race. Never race in new shoes. It will give you blisters that hurt!
-
Find the proper clothing. It is important in racing that you wear the correct clothing. Light/tight clothing works well. Don't wear baggy clothing like sweatpants unless they are lightweight and do not affect your running. Hoodies are probably not the best choice.
-
Wear socks designed for running. This helps to avoid discomfort during and after your run. Avoid wearing old cotton socks. It is better to buy new running socks.
Tips
- Remember that running isn't a fashion show. When buying clothes, think first of your comfort and running ability. Although you should be able to find clothes that are both stylish and comfortable, don't buy something that will hinder your running just because it looks good.
- Don't wear jewelry. Dangling jewelry can bounce around and slow you down. *For those on school teams, check with your school to see if there is a uniform, or any guidelines about what clothing is allowed.
- For those with long hair, pull your hair back so it won't be in your face as you run.
