How to Dress in Layers and Still Look Fashionable
Cold winter months require extra layers to keep warm. Fortunately, today, dressing in layers is in vogue! It's easy to wear layers and still look fashionable if you have the right clothing pieces and accessories!
Create your basic wardrobe. First of all, you are going to need some basic clothing pieces in order to mix and match while layering. Invest in a stylish winter coat. With coats, you can wear pretty much any top under it, and still look great. Wearing a grey, black, white, or tan coat will allow you to wear almost any color of pants or a dress. Other great pieces to stock up on include various cardigans, a warm bubble or fur vest, a cute sweater, a leather jacket, and even mini jackets. Don't forget jeans as well. Jeans are a must-have for any month, since they match everything! Having basic staples allow you to create multiple outfits when mixing them with your clothes from warmer months.
Stock up on camis/undershirts. These are fashion lifesavers. Whether you feel like a strapless bra needs extra support, or a shirt is a little too revealing, one of these can come in handy. Undershirts also can keep you warm during the winter, so don't be afraid to wear them under your regular clothes. They can also add a fashionable layering effect to any outfit.
Accessorize! Accessories play a big part in a fashionable outfit. Scarves work with any winter outfit. You can wear them over a coat or a long sleeved top. There are also many cute ways to tie scarves. Don't forget jewelry though! Earrings (dangling and stud), long necklaces, and giant rings are all in style. Don't forget hats, headbands, and belts!
Wear cute patterns. Patterns are extremely hot right now, especially floral print, stripes, tribal print, animal print, and polka dots. Match these with a solid colored jacket or cardigan for effortless layering style.
Get some nice boots. Boots are essential for winter fashion. They can complete an outfit in an instant. Buy at least one pair of leather boots, and a suede pair as well. It's a good idea that these boots are neutral colors, in order to match most of your other clothes.
Try tights or leggings with a skirt or dress. These allow you to wear a mini dress or skirt without freezing yourself to death. Luckily, knitted tights are in style, which allow for extra warmth. If knitted isn't really your thing, check out black lace tights, plain leggings, or patterned leggings.
- Experiment with different textures and the looseness effect. Loose fitted tees are very stylish right now, and look cute with a pair or skinny jeans or a tight skirt.
- When trying to layer without being caught layering, try to choose colors to layer that are very similar to each other. Experiment with different straps as well, suck as racer-back, halter, or strapless.
- Don't layer baggy clothes over baggy clothes. A good rule to follow is; baggy over tight fitted layers.
- Don't layer short sleeved items over long sleeved items. It may be fashionable in the future, but for now, it's not. Stick with layering your tank tops and short sleeved shirts under your long sleeved pieces
